Ghana is witnessing renewed debate over religious expression in mission schools as Christian leaders push back against calls for non-Christian students—particularly Muslims—to freely practice their faith on campus.

The latest controversy stems from a legal action filed by a private lawyer against Wesley Girls’ High School, an elite all-girls institution known for its strong Methodist heritage.

In a joint statement, the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference and the Christian Council of Ghana argued that mission schools must be allowed to preserve their long-standing Christian identity, even as they receive government support and enroll students from diverse religious backgrounds.

The debate has reignited national conversations about religious freedom, cultural heritage, and the balance between institutional autonomy and students’ rights.
