Ghana’s Minority caucus has staged a dramatic walkout in Parliament, refusing to participate in the vetting of Chief Justice nominee Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie. The incident occurred on Monday as the Appointments Committee prepared to begin proceedings.
The Minority MPs insisted that the vetting should not proceed while legal challenges involving the removed Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, remain pending before the courts. They argue that continuing the process undermines judicial fairness and the constitutional order.
Despite their objections, the Majority side maintained that Parliament is obligated to carry out its mandate, especially after Speaker Alban Bagbin ruled that there was no constitutional basis to halt the vetting.
The standoff deepens political tensions around the nomination, signaling further debates in the days ahead.
