Ghana’s Trades Union Congress (TUC) is pushing back strongly against fresh electricity and water tariff increases set to take effect on January 1, 2026. The union argues that the hikes — 9.8% for electricity and 15.9% for water — will wipe out the 9% rise in minimum wage and base pay scheduled for the same day, leaving workers worse off.

According to the TUC, many households have already endured a difficult year marked by earlier tariff adjustments and escalating living costs. The latest increases, the union says, reflect government’s “insensitivity” to the daily struggles of ordinary Ghanaians.

Organised Labour insists it will not accept the new tariffs unless government returns to the negotiating table to enhance the 2026 wage adjustment. It is also threatening nationwide mobilisation to resist what it calls an “obnoxious” policy. The TUC is expected to address the issue at a press conference on December 8.

Meanwhile, some Ghanaians have begun reacting to the tariff changes announced by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), which confirmed the adjustments after completing its 2026–2030 Multi-Year Tariff Review.
