Ghana’s President, Nana Akufo-Addo, on Monday commissioned the Ghana Navy’s largest vessel, the Ghana Navy Ship (GNS) Achimota, as part of efforts to modernize the fleet and enhance maritime security.
The diesel-powered vessel, equipped with a single-screw pitch propeller, boasts high endurance for deep-sea and international voyage navigation. Originally built in Japan in 1999, the GNS Achimota represents a significant upgrade to the Navy’s operational capacity.
President Akufo-Addo highlighted that the acquisition aligns with his government’s commitment to securing Ghana’s maritime resources, combating illegal activities, and asserting sovereignty over the Gulf of Guinea. The ship is expected to contribute to regional security while protecting the country’s natural assets.
This development reflects a broader strategy to modernize the Ghana Navy and strengthen its role in safeguarding national and regional waters.
