Some environmental groups in Ghana are raising alarms about the vulnerability of the capital, Accra, to flooding.
They are, therefore, urging the government to prioritize flood protection and preventive measures.
This has become the situation after years of inadequate urban planning has forced tens of thousands of residents to settle in low-lying areas prone to flooding.
According to Malik Mino Ereira, an ecologist with Planet Waves, and I quote, “It is due to poor planning and the failure of municipal authorities to enforce laws. The second reason is urbanization, as people move in and need a place to stay. They clear vegetation and find somewhere to live,” end of quote.
The flooding problem in Accra, which is inhabited by nearly 3 million people, has been exacerbated over the years by the increasing frequency and intensity of rainstorms due to climate change.
Ecologists argue that a comprehensive overhaul of the city’s housing is necessary, especially due to the rising sea levels increasingly threatening coastal communities like Accra.
