Ghana is pushing for a decisive, time-bound action plan to accelerate the implementation of the long-awaited ECO single currency for West Africa.

Speaking at the 2025 West Africa Economic Summit in Abuja, Ghana’s Deputy Finance Minister, Thomas Ampem Nyarko, emphasized the need for clarity and urgency, citing the economic benefits of a unified regional currency.

The ECO, first proposed over two decades ago, has faced repeated delays. Ghana’s call reflects growing impatience among member states to move from rhetoric to results in achieving monetary integration across the region.
