The Ghana Armed Forces has suspended its 2025/2026 recruitment exercise in Accra after a deadly stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium early Wednesday morning. At least six applicants lost their lives, while several others sustained injuries when hundreds of hopeful recruits breached security barriers in a rush to enter the venue.
President John Dramani Mahama ordered the suspension and directed a full review of safety and crowd management protocols. He later visited the injured victims and extended condolences to the bereaved families.
Security analyst Samuel Appiah criticized the military’s approach, citing poor planning and inadequate crowd control as major causes of the tragedy. The exercise is expected to resume on Thursday for the Air Force, with the Navy and Army sessions following later in the week.
