A leading International Relations Expert in Ghana, Professor Vladimir Antwi-Danso, has expressed concerns over ECOWAS’s decision to deploy a regional standby force to Benin following the recent attempted coup. He cautioned the bloc against what he described as a “knee-jerk response” to the situation.

According to Professor Antwi-Danso, while regional stability is important, ECOWAS must carefully assess the long-term implications and sustainability of such a deployment. He noted that military interventions require clear strategies, adequate resources, and strong political consensus among member states.

He added that the bloc should consider whether the move aligns with its broader peace and security frameworks, especially in a context where ECOWAS is grappling with multiple regional crises. Uncoordinated or reactionary actions, he warned, could undermine public confidence in the organization.

As discussions continue, the expert emphasized the need for a more measured, strategic approach that prioritizes diplomacy, institutional reforms, and collaborative security mechanisms across West Africa.
