Civil society organisations in The Gambia have voiced strong criticism following the National Assembly’s rejection of the 2024 draft constitution during its second reading on Monday. The decision, viewed by many as politically motivated, is seen as a major setback in the country’s democratic reform efforts.

Despite not being directly involved in the drafting process, advocacy groups like Gambia Participates actively engaged with lawmakers and submitted recommendations. They argue that while no constitution is perfect, the broader national interest should have taken precedence over party politics.

Executive Director Marr Niang noted that some clauses offered significant improvements, particularly on term limits and human rights protections, which now remain in limbo.

The development has reignited public debate over the future of constitutional reform in the country, with many urging lawmakers to return to the negotiating table.
