UNICEF Country Representative Nafisa Binte Shafique has commended The Gambia for the strides made in improving the welfare of children. Speaking about the government’s efforts, she highlighted the implementation of legal frameworks and the creation of a conducive environment for protecting children’s rights.
However, she expressed concerns over findings from a recent national census by The Gambia Bureau of Statistics, which revealed that 9 out of 10 children in the country face deprivation of one or more fundamental rights.
While recognizing progress, she stressed the need for accelerated efforts to ensure all children in The Gambia can fully enjoy their rights and live in a supportive, protected environment.
This call underscores UNICEF’s commitment to collaborating with stakeholders to enhance the well-being and future of Gambian children.
