The Gambian government is tackling a massive payroll scandal after an audit revealed that over 1,400 ghost workers cost the state nearly 24 million dalasis (about $334,000) in 2024.
The revelation was made by the Minister of Public Service during an address to the National Assembly, where he outlined plans to recover funds and improve payroll oversight.
Ghost workers—nonexistent employees drawing salaries—were identified across several ministries, exposing weak personnel management systems.
Lawmakers have called for strict accountability, warning that continued payroll fraud threatens national development efforts.
