The National Human Rights Commission of The Gambia has urged the retraining and reorientation of law enforcement officers following mounting concerns about excessive use of force during public demonstrations.

The Commission emphasized that such reforms are vital to ensure respect for human rights and democratic freedoms, especially as the nation approaches the 2026 elections.

It noted that public frustration over corruption and governance challenges continues to rise, making professional conduct by security forces even more critical.

The Rights Commission is urging authorities to prioritize human rights education and accountability within the police force to restore public trust.
