The Gambia Press Union (GPU) is calling on the government to revisit a set of contentious media laws, including the newly enacted Criminal Offences Act 2025. The Union argues that several provisions—particularly those on false publications and broadcasting—mirror restrictive elements from the old criminal code. Concerns were also raised about aspects of the Cybercrime Bill 2023.
The appeal was made during the GPU’s 10th National Journalism Awards, an event dedicated to celebrating a decade of journalistic excellence. The ceremony brought together reporters, editors, and media stakeholders committed to strengthening press freedom and accountability.
Speakers at the event underscored the need for legal reforms that genuinely protect journalists while promoting responsible reporting. They emphasized that outdated or overly punitive laws risk undermining democratic progress and stifling public discourse.
By renewing its call for legislative review, the GPU reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding media independence and ensuring that journalists can operate without fear of criminalisation for their work.
