Gambian authorities have intercepted a large canoe carrying 180 migrants attempting to depart for Spain. The operation was conducted early Saturday, November 9, near Dog Island during routine naval patrols.
According to reports from insidegambia, the passengers included 163 Gambians, 15 Senegalese, and 2 Guineans from Conakry. The group was headed for a dangerous Mediterranean crossing in hopes of reaching Europe.
Officials say the interception is part of ongoing efforts to curb irregular migration, which continues to put thousands of West African youths at risk.
