The Gambian government has begun paying reparations to victims of human rights abuses committed during the 22-year rule of former president Yahya Jammeh.

The payments come more than three years after the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) submitted its final report, which recommended compensation for victims of the Jammeh era.

The violations documented by the Commission include torture, arbitrary detention, enforced disappearances, rape, and extrajudicial killings.

According to the Commission, the compensation process will be carried out in phases.
