Officials in Banjul have announced the arrest of the alleged mastermind behind the deadly December 31, 2025 boat tragedy off Niumi Jinack in the North Bank Region.
The Gambia Immigration Department confirmed that the main suspect was apprehended in Senegal following a joint cross-border investigation involving Gambian and Senegalese security services.
At least 39 migrants lost their lives when a wooden boat carrying more than 250 people attempted to reach the Canary Islands. One hundred and twelve passengers were rescued, while several others remain missing.
Authorities say the arrest marks a significant step toward accountability as investigations into the tragedy continue.
