Victims of human rights abuses and activists in The Gambia have expressed support for ECOWAS’s decision to establish a hybrid court to prosecute crimes committed during former President Yahya Jammeh’s 22-year rule.
The landmark announcement was made at the recent ECOWAS Heads of State Summit in Abuja, Nigeria. The tribunal aims to bring justice for atrocities committed during Jammeh’s regime, including torture, extrajudicial killings, and enforced disappearances.
Rights defenders view this as a significant step toward accountability and healing for victims, urging swift implementation of the court’s establishment.
