In The Gambia, the Organization of Sign Language Interpreters and Deaf Advocates (OSDIVI) has renewed calls for persons with disabilities to be fully included in national decision-making processes. The appeal was made on Wednesday as the group joined global commemorations of World Disability Day.
OSDIVI stressed that despite policy commitments, meaningful participation of disabled persons in governance remains limited. The organization highlighted the need for stronger government action to ensure equal opportunities, accessible institutions, and representation at all levels of public decision-making.
This year’s theme, “Fostering disability-inclusive societies for advancing social progress,” underscores the global push toward creating environments where persons with disabilities can engage, contribute, and thrive. Advocates say The Gambia must align its national systems with this vision.
Calling for a renewed sense of urgency, OSDIVI urged policymakers, civil society and partners to work collaboratively to ensure disability inclusion becomes a practical reality rather than a symbolic aspiration.
