Former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga, 80, who was also a candidate for the chairmanship of the African Union Commission, died on the morning of Wednesday, October 15, 2025, following a heart attack in Koothattukulam, Kerala, India.
According to Indian media reports, Odinga had travelled to Kerala to undergo Ayurvedic treatment. After a sudden deterioration in his health, he was rushed to the Sreedhareyam Ayurvedic Eye Hospital and Research Centre, but was unable to receive treatment. His body has been kept at Deva Matha Hospital in Koothattukulam.
Odinga’s passing comes just months after he declared his candidacy for the African Union Commission presidency, a position ultimately won by Djibouti’s Mahmoud Ali Youssouf.
Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema extended his condolences to the Kenyan people, President William Ruto, the Odinga family, and all those mourning his loss.
