Mozambique’s maritime authorities have launched an emergency search and rescue operation after a cargo vessel, Cara, sank in the access channel to the port of Beira, killing three Indian crew members and leaving one Mozambican missing.

The incident, which occurred on October 16, involved the ship owned by Indian company Unik Marine Service and has prompted a large-scale response in waters off Sofala province.

According to the Maritime Transport Institute, the vessel had 21 crew members on board — 14 Indian nationals and seven Mozambicans — when it went down.

Preliminary reports confirm that five Indians and six Mozambicans were rescued alive, while the bodies of three Indian nationals have been recovered. Search teams continue to look for the missing Mozambican crew member as rescue operations intensify in the area.

The port of Beira, a major gateway for cargo traffic in southern Africa, remains operational as authorities work to assess the cause of the accident and prevent further maritime incidents.
