Ghana’s Ewurabena Aubynn has officially been sworn in as the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North, despite a dramatic walkout by the minority in parliament.
Her induction follows a tight rerun election, where she edged out NPP’s Akua Afriyie by just 209 votes. The rerun was ordered by the Electoral Commission due to earlier irregularities.
The minority staged a protest after their Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, was barred from speaking before the oath-taking. Speaker Bagbin upheld an objection from Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, sparking the walkout.
Aubynn’s swearing-in gives the NDC an absolute majority. Ayariga has promised that this power will not be misused.
