The global discussion in 2024 is expected to open packed with unfolding and developing events from 2023, says the World Economic Forum in its Global Risk Report for the year.
Looking back at the events last year, plenty of developments captured the attention of people around the world – while others received minimal scrutiny.
Vulnerable populations grappled with lethal conflicts, from Sudan to Ethiopia, the ravaging insurgency in the Sahel region in countries like Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, alongside record-breaking flooding, drought, heat conditions and wildfires.
For almost all of these and more, societal discontent was palpable in many countries, with news cycles dominated by polarization, riots and strikes that had globally destabilizing consequences.
What experts however did reference was the interconnectedness of the global crisis with the environment.
