A new economic era is on the horizon for West Africa. At the closing of the Sahel Governance Forum in Banjul, ECOWAS President Dr. Omar Alieu Touray announced that the region’s long-delayed single currency, the Eco, will be launched in 2027.
This renewed commitment signals a bold step toward deeper economic integration among member states. The unified currency is expected to enhance intra-regional trade, ease transactions, and solidify a shared West African identity.
Regional leaders say the Eco will also promote financial stability and reduce reliance on foreign currencies.
The announcement has reignited discussions on implementation timelines, convergence criteria, and the political will needed to bring the Eco to life.
