The 43rd meeting of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council at the ambassadorial level has opened in Abuja, where representatives from member states are assessing the region’s deepening crises. The gathering comes at a time of escalating political tensions, recurrent military takeovers, and worsening humanitarian conditions across West Africa.

Delegates are reviewing security developments and identifying priority areas for coordinated regional action. The discussions bring together senior officials from the Political Affairs, Peace and Security, and Early Warning Directorates, reflecting the scale and urgency of the threats confronting the bloc.

According to organisers, the meeting aims to strengthen preventive diplomacy efforts and reinforce mechanisms designed to address terrorism, violent extremism, and unconstitutional changes of government. The council is expected to recommend stronger collective responses to safeguard regional stability.

ECOWAS continues to warn that instability in one member state poses a threat to the entire region. As insecurity spreads and governance challenges deepen, the bloc is urging political leaders to recommit to democratic norms and work collaboratively to protect peace and stability.
