Banjul is playing host to the first-ever ECOWAS Excellence Awards for Journalists, celebrating some of West Africa’s finest media professionals. The ceremony takes place today, July 25, 2025, as part of ECOWAS’s 50th anniversary celebrations.
Twelve journalists from across the region will be recognised for their outstanding contributions to public service journalism. Their work has helped shape democratic discourse, promote accountability, and amplify underrepresented voices.
The event is held under the patronage of Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, president of the ECOWAS Commission. Organisers say the awards are meant to inspire excellence and reinforce the critical role of the press in regional development.
Stakeholders hope the initiative becomes a permanent fixture, strengthening the commitment to press freedom and ethical journalism in West Africa.
