Defence ministers from the Economic Community of West African States ECOWAS converge on Abuja on Thursday to discuss the possible activation of the standby force.

The move follows the unprecedented increase in security threats.

The force was first conceived three years ago but has yet to fully be operational while violent extremism shifts from the Sahel to coastal states.

Thousands of lives have been lost and millions of people displaced due terrorism.

Thus, The Commission says it received approval from the authority of heads of state through the council of ministers to address the menace.
