In the Democratic Republic of Congo, at least 89 civilians have been killed in a series of coordinated attacks by ADF rebels in eastern Lubero territory, according to the UN peacekeeping force, MONUSCO.
The assaults, carried out between November 13 and 19 across several localities in North Kivu province, claimed the lives of at least 20 women and an unknown number of children. MONUSCO reports that one of the deadliest incidents occurred at a Catholic Church–run health centre in Byambwe, where at least 17 people — including women seeking maternity care — were killed. Rebels also set fire to four patient wards.
The ADF fighters are accused of committing further abuses, including abductions and the looting of medical supplies in the affected communities.
MONUSCO has called on Congolese authorities to launch swift, independent, and credible investigations to identify and prosecute those responsible for the massacres.
