The UN Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO) and the Rwandan government have welcomed the July 19 signing of a peace declaration between the Congolese government and AFC/M23 rebels in Doha. Both parties praised the move as a milestone for restoring peace in eastern DRC.
MONUSCO called the agreement “essential” for long-term stability and urged all sides to uphold their commitments, including a permanent ceasefire and safe return of displaced civilians. The mission reaffirmed its support for implementation and independent monitoring.
Rwanda also lauded the declaration, crediting Qatari mediation and backing from the U.S., AU, EAC, and SADC. Kigali said the deal focuses on tackling the root causes of the conflict and boosting regional security.
A final peace agreement is expected by August 18, following a June 27 DRC-Rwanda accord signed in Washington.
