A simple yet significant monument marks the memory of Liberia’s First President in downtown Monravia’s Mamba Point District. Among the surrounds of the former Ducor Hotel is this bronze statue of Joseph Jenkins Roberts standing above a relief plate.
Unlike the independent statue, which depicts a poised statue of the president holding a scroll, the relief plaque tells the story of Joseph Roberts’ life.
While born and raised in Virginia, US, Joseph Jenkins Roberts is renowned for his historic presidency following Liberia’s independence in 1848. As Liberia’s President in 1871, he served another four-year term after serving seven years.
