In the Gambia, civil society group Election Watch has welcomed the appointment of Joseph Colley as the new Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC). The decision was made by President Adama Barrow ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Colley replaces Alieu Momar Njie, who led the commission for several years. His appointment signals a shift as the country prepares for a critical electoral season.
