Former Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo is calling on the International Criminal Court to reopen investigations into the true masterminds behind the 2011 post-election crisis. In a letter to citizens dated Monday, December 7, he urged the Court to identify those who may have planned or financed the violence.
Gbagbo, who was definitively acquitted by the ICC in 2021, emphasized that renewed inquiries are essential for uncovering the full truth. His appeal also highlights lingering questions surrounding the crisis, which left deep political and social scars across Côte d’Ivoire.
Observers, along with his lawyer Emmanuel Altit, say the move could serve as a foundation for genuine national reconciliation. They argue that impartial accountability remains a crucial step toward rebuilding trust among Ivorians.
As the country looks to consolidate stability ahead of future elections, Gbagbo’s latest call is reigniting debate over justice, responsibility, and the nation’s efforts to move beyond one of its most painful chapters.
