Union leaders in Côte d’Ivoire’s education sector were briefly detained after launching a strike demanding unpaid allowances totaling over 400 billion CFA francs.
The arrests took place following a meeting with Education Minister Mariatou Koné in Abidjan. The leaders were released hours later, but the incident sparked outcry from labor groups.
The Union for the Revaluation of Secondary Education Personnel (SYRES) condemned the move, calling it a violation of union rights.
