In Côte d’Ivoire, the opposition PPA-CI has unveiled a new Initiative for the Liberation of Prisoners of Conscience (ILPO), intensifying its demand for the release of activists detained after the banned protest of October 11, 2025. The party says several hundred supporters remain behind bars.
Led by former President Laurent Gbagbo, PPA-CI argues that the detentions represent a broader deterioration of political and civic freedoms in the country. The initiative is positioned as both a legal and moral campaign aimed at restoring fundamental rights.
As part of the effort, party members are being mobilized to provide direct support to the families of detainees, many of whom say they have been left vulnerable since the arrests. The party hopes this combined community and political pressure will accelerate the release of those it considers political prisoners.
The launch of ILPO comes at a time of rising political tension, with opposition groups warning that continued repression could undermine national stability ahead of upcoming electoral processes.
