The Government of Côte d’Ivoire has released Mamadou Hawa Gassama, a former member of Mali’s National Transitional Council, following months of detention in Abidjan.

Gassama had been arrested in July 2025 and later sentenced in early January 2026 for making offensive remarks against President Alassane Ouattara. His conviction had drawn attention in both Abidjan and Bamako.

The circumstances surrounding his release have not yet been fully detailed by authorities. However, the development marks a significant turn in a case that stirred diplomatic and political discussions between Côte d’Ivoire and Mali.

Observers say the move could ease tensions and reopen dialogue between the two West African neighbours.
