Tension gripped Guinea’s capital on Tuesday after unrest erupted at Conakry Central Prison. Inmates, protesting the reported transfer of Toumba Diakité, forced open cell doors and attempted to escape, triggering chaos within the facility.
Gunfire was heard from inside the prison walls as security forces moved to contain the disturbance. Authorities swiftly intervened to prevent a mass breakout, amid fears the situation could spiral further.
Downtown Conakry descended into panic as residents and workers rushed to leave the city centre for the suburbs. Traffic congestion mounted while businesses shut their doors over safety concerns.
Army armored vehicles and elite GIGN units from the gendarmerie were deployed around the prison to secure the area and restore calm, as security remains heightened across the capital.
