Comorian President Azali Assoumani is reportedly under intensive care at a hospital in the nation’s capital following an assassination attempt on Friday.
Although he survived the knife attack, authorities are yet to communicate any additional information on his health status.
Assoumani was attacked in the middle of the street by a soldier armed with a bladed weapon.
A government spokeswoman told the media that the attack happened around 2 p.m. in Salimani Itsandra, a town north of Moroni, the capital of the Comoros.
The motive behind the attack is yet to be established but the attacker has been arrested by state security officials.
Azali Assoumani had just returned from a trip to China and proceeded to attend a funeral.
This assassination attempt comes in a tense political climate in the Island nation of some eight hundred and thirty-three thousand people, where President Assoumani, has ruled since 2003.
The most recent victory for the 65-year-old politician was in the 2024 elections which remain contested by the opposition.
