Our community report is from Senegal, precisely, Loumbi Sanarabe, 65 kilometers from Oréfondé in the Matam department.
There, 34 communities have taken a decisive step – a step to officially declare the abandonment of female genital mutilation and child marriage.
This decision was made possible through Tostan, a global organization that supports communities in shaping their own vision of well-being.
In Loumbi Sanarabe, FGM is now a thing of the past thanks to Tostan’s Community Empowerment Program, which climaxed with a public ceremony marking a major turning point for the region.
The gathering brought together nearly 500 people from the commune of Oréfondé and surrounding areas.
Abdullahi Hassan has more in this report by WADR’s Maimouna Fofana.
