In Chad, ten victims of the deadly October 2022 confrontations between police and demonstrators have filed a complaint at a court in Ndjamena, seeking justice two years after the tragic events.
The protest, dubbed “Black Thursday,” saw a brutal crackdown by the then-military regime on demonstrators demanding the end of military rule. A 2023 report by the Chadian League of Human Rights and the World Organization Against Torture (OMCT) revealed that 216 civilians were killed, dozens tortured, and over 1,300 arrested. Forty individuals remain missing.
Supported by human rights groups, the victims are calling for a thorough investigation, prosecution of those responsible, and compensation for those affected. The OMCT has indicated that this legal action targets specific individuals and aims to ensure accountability and redress.
