In The Gambia, cement importers have accused the government of favoring a specific business at their expense. This follows a new government directive that significantly increases customs duties on cement importation.

The policy raises the cost per bag of imported cement from 85 Dalasis (about $1.5) to 185 Dalasis (about $3). Importers have called on the authorities to reverse this new customs duty policy immediately.

The Chairperson of Cement Importers, Sheikh Cham, addressed the press, urging the government to reconsider its decision. He outlined the numerous negative implications this policy will have on businesses and trade with neighboring Senegal.
