President Paul Biya, 92, the world’s oldest head of state, has won re-election for an eighth term, according to official results announced on Monday by the Constitutional Council.
The declaration comes amidst a series of protests that have rocked several cities and regional capitals of the Central African nation.
According to the results, President Biya won with 53.66%, while opposition candidate Issa Tchiroma got a vote of 35.19%.
Over the weekend, Cameroon’s Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji, said security forces arrested three terrorists who attempted to transport explosives to the Northern region.
According to Atanga Nji, the three suspects intended to infiltrate protesters and carry out terrorist attacks, adding that public order will be reinforced.
