Vote counting is ongoing in Cameroon following Sunday’s presidential election, where about eight million voters went to the polls to choose a new president.

The electoral commission, ELECAM, confirmed that 12 candidates, including one woman, were cleared by the Constitutional Council to contest the race. Incumbent Paul Biya, aged 92, is seeking an eighth term in office.

With limited opposition, Biya’s main challenger was former government spokesperson Issa Tchiroma Bakary. Polls opened at 8 a.m. and closed at 6 p.m., with authorities reporting a largely peaceful process despite isolated incidents.
