Burkina Faso’s Transitional Legislative Assembly has given unanimous approval to a nuclear cooperation agreement with Russia, marking a major step in the country’s push to expand its national energy strategy. All 71 members present during Friday’s plenary session, chaired by Ousmane Bougouma, voted in favour of the deal.
The agreement, originally signed on June 19, 2025, in Saint Petersburg, outlines plans to deepen technical and strategic collaboration between Ouagadougou and Moscow in the energy sector.
Officials say the ratification positions Burkina Faso to explore nuclear power as part of its long-term efforts to diversify energy sources and address chronic electricity shortages.
