Burkina Faso’s transitional government has granted amnesty to nearly one thousand prisoners.

The decree was approved by the military head of state, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, and also includes reduced sentences for several inmates.

Authorities in Ouagadougou say the decision forms part of a New Year clemency initiative.

The measure was announced during a meeting of the Council of Ministers.
