In Benin, the main opposition party, The Democrats, has voiced discontent over the electoral calendar unveiled by the National Autonomous Electoral Commission for the 2026 general elections.
The party’s primary concern lies with the controversial candidate sponsorship system, which it says undermines political competition.
The Democrats had earlier criticized the initial deadline for withdrawing sponsorship forms, which was set for the end of July. That deadline has now been extended to September 2, following mounting public pressure.
This development adds to growing political tension as the country heads toward the high-stakes 2026 polls.
