Benin’s Special Court for the Repression of Economic Offenses and Terrorism (CRIET) has launched an investigation into a high-profile bribery case involving the leader of the political party Le Libéral, Richard Boni Ouorou.
CRIET’s prosecutor, Mario Metonou, confirmed the arrest of Ouorou and key Ministry of Interior officials, including the Director of Political Parties and Electoral Affairs.
Authorities allege large cash payments were made to obtain official party recognition. While both parties acknowledge financial exchanges, their accounts differ.
CRIET warns that, if found guilty, those involved could face severe prison sentences and hefty fines. Investigations are ongoing.
