Benin has introduced a new rule limiting heavy trucks exceeding ten tonnes to specific routes in the Greater Nokoué area during the night. The restriction applies between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. and will take effect on January 1, 2026.
Authorities say the measure is aimed at reducing the high number of road accidents in key southern cities, where traffic congestion and frequent collisions have become a growing concern.
Beyond road safety, the government also hopes the move will extend the lifespan of critical infrastructure, as heavy vehicles are known to accelerate road deterioration.
The policy has already sparked discussions among transport operators and logistics firms, who are expected to adjust their schedules and operations ahead of the 2026 deadline.
