A Nigerian army detachment has completed its deployment in Benin and formally withdrawn from the Togbin military camp. Approximately 260 troops arrived following the December 7, 2025 attempted coup, fulfilling their security assistance mission as agreed between the neighboring nations.
Beninese Armed Forces Chief of General Staff General Fructueux Gbaguidi presided over a formal farewell ceremony on January 30, 2026. The event honored the contingent’s service and underscored the strong bilateral defense cooperation between the two West African states.
Senior military officials from both countries attended the ceremony alongside Nigeria’s ambassador to Benin, Olukayode Olugbenga Aluko. The dignified send-off reflected mutual respect and the successful conclusion of the temporary security arrangement.
The withdrawal marks a return to normalcy for Benin’s security architecture, with national forces resuming full operational control. The seamless transition highlights regional solidarity while affirming Benin’s restored stability following the December political incident.
