In Benin, the crew of a suspicious ship that ran aground near a beach in Cotonou has been placed under custody.

The 18 suspects in the case were presented to the prosecutor at the beginning of the week. They will be tried on August 14 for “trafficking petroleum products, navigating without authorization, and abuse of power.”

Two national navy officers and a Beninese police officer are also in custody.

The ship, which was transporting fuel, was deemed suspicious by Beninese authorities after it ran aground on the weekend of June 29 near a beach in Cotonou.

The pumping of the 250,000 liters of diesel it contained has been completed, according to Beninese authorities, who made it a priority to prevent pollution.
