Ghana’s Auditor-General has revealed contract irregularities amounting to over GH¢870 million in the 2024 public accounts report. The losses highlight major weaknesses in contract enforcement across public boards, corporations, and statutory institutions.
A bulk of the irregularities stem from delayed payments of Interim Payment Certificates (IPCs) to contractors, resulting in GH¢615.9 million in interest liabilities. The report links this to poor oversight and chronic inefficiencies in project execution.
With Ghana under an IMF-backed program requiring stricter spending controls, the findings raise red flags over fiscal discipline and accountability in the public sector. The irregularities pose serious risks to the country’s economic recovery efforts.
The Auditor-General has called on management of affected institutions to urgently strengthen internal controls and ensure full enforcement of contract terms to prevent further financial losses.
