The African Union has restarted mediation efforts with the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), drawing regional focus to the tense political climate in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. The talks aim to restore constitutional rule and address worsening security and humanitarian concerns.
Engagements began with AU envoys visiting Bamako, Ouagadougou, and Niamey in recent weeks. On Monday, Mali’s transitional leader Assimi Goita spoke with Burundian President Evariste Ndayishimiye, the AU’s new Special Envoy to the Sahel, about strengthening political dialogue.
While the renewed diplomacy is welcomed, analysts like AU governance expert Ibrahima Kane question its potential impact, citing the entrenched positions of Sahel leaders who have extended their transitional timelines.
Observers say success will depend on sustained pressure, regional collaboration, and whether AES authorities show real commitment to a return to civilian rule.
